An Island Waiting to Be Explored
Vancouver Island offers up remarkable adventures and activities all year round – each season bringing something special and unique.
Beaches & Rivers
The beaches in the area tend to be rocky. Rock sizes range from pebbles to boulders and the ease of walking or swimming on the beach varies accordingly. We also get large tides in the region (As much as 16′ or 4.5m). This opens up a large intertidal zone which can be great for exploring the beach and the ocean. It is sheltered inland waterway so waves are seldom really large.
The rivers that come down to the Salish Sea on our coast had truly magnificent forests before we colonized the area. They are approaching that former glory again, over 100 years later. Rivers are always frequented by animals and spawning salmon. This makes a walk along a river or stream interesting to say the least.
Paddle Adventuring
Kayaks, Canoes and Paddle Boards are available for rent in Courtenay, Qualicum, Horne Lake and Deep Bay. Courtenay and Deep Bay are on the edge of Baynes Sound. This is a sheltered body of water and not too challenging for beginner paddlers. There is still lots to explore in the way of underwater life and empty coastline.
Trails & Hiking
In our area, Lighthouse Country, there is a fantastic group of volunteers that are dedicated to building and maintaining the trail network. They do an incredible job and since they use the trails they are in the right places They serve hikers, joggers, dog walkers and even cyclists on some of the trails. Since the biggest and best trees are in the riparian zones on either side of a creek or river that tends to be where the trails are.
Skiing & Snowboarding
The Mount Washington, alpine resort, about a 1 hr, drive north of us, offers world class snow play. There is great skiing and snowboarding available and because it is off the beaten path there are seldom any crowds. Mid week in the winter can yield great snow and you can have the mountain to yourself. The temperature is not far below zero “C” on the mountain so it is occasionally icy and the powder is often wet. not fluffy.
Boating & Fishing
There are fishing charters available from the marinas in Deep Bay and French Creek. Fishing charters on the Salish Sea have to be booked in advance and the type of seafood caught depends on the season. Fly fishing is also available in the rivers and creeks.
Local Dinning
The nearest restaurants are about 3 km away in Qualicum Bay. Qualicum Beach, about 14 km away, has far more variety and quality. We have a small galley kitchen and a barbeque on the premises.
